Försäkringskassan Swedish Social Insurance Agency

Swedish Social Insurance Agency

In Sweden we have a publicly funded social insurance that will provide financial security during the different stages of life. Swedish social insurance includes insurance and contributions to families with children, to people with a disability or illness, and to the elderly. Social insurance is financed by taxes and contributions.

Försäkringskassan is a very important part of the Swedish welfare system. Their website describes it the best as well as explains how you apply using your bankID. Here you will receive benefits such as "barnbidrag" and benefits/deductions when going to the dentist, when you are out of work or when you need parental leave.

If you have bankID you can easily register by entering the website. If you have not received bankID, you can still request a physical form where you can fill in by hand and send by post to Försäkringskassan. I recommend waiting until you receive a BankID because you will need a person number before registering either way.

Insurance

It is important that you insure yourself, your apartment/house and your belongings during your stay in Sweden. Therefore you will need two types of insurance, home insurance (hemförsäkring) and personal accident insurance (olycksfallsförsäkring). Home insurance will also cover you when you travel during the first 45 days. The largest Swedish insurance companies are Trygg-Hansa, Folksam, If and Länsförsäkringar but there are many others. Make sure you compare prices and terms before you choose your insurance. You can also use an online service to compare insurance prices such as Insplanet or Compricer. Both websites are in Swedish only, but use their telephone number to call customer service for help in English.

Care of sick child (VAB)

If you need to stay home from work or refrain from receiving unemployment benefit, you can receive compensation for care of a sick child (vab).
